Yesterday I though Sandi was going to have her puppies. She started pacing around and whining off and on, but nothing happened. She didn't seem to be in any distress, so I thought I must have misinterpreted the signs. After all, she still had until Tuesday morning before she was technically "overdue". Then, this morning there was more of the pacing and she started shivering a lot. I thought that was a bit different, and was hoping today was the day. Around 1530 we let her out to use the bathroom, and when she came back in she was very wet. Not the kind of wet you get from sitting in a puddle. The kind of wet you get from have your water break. However, she still wasn't acting like anything was going on. I went through a very bad labor and delivery with my Husky about 10 years ago, and did not want that again. It was about to be the weekend, and the closest emergency vet is 30 minutes away, so I thought I should take her in. I just wanted to have the vet look at her and confirm that nothing seemed "wrong".
So, we packed her up and ran her over to the vet(1645). On the way to the vet's I got the most in depth unavoidable question about child birth that I have ever gotten from my boys. "Do the puppies come out her Butt?" So, the boys got a very brief verbal anatomy lesson today. To which Zeke said "YUC". LOL. We finally go to the vet's, where I can't believe some of the questions she asked. First, she asked if it was a planned pregnancy -- Why on earth would that matter?? Then, after looking at Sandi (who at this point we were referring to as the Goodyear Blimp), she asks me if I am sure she is pregnant. HMMMM -- YES!!! Are you kidding me?? Finally I decided, after the vet did nothing to make me feel more comfortable about how things were going, that we should have her X-rayed. Having the X-ray would at least let me know how many puppies to expect. That way I would more easily know if something was going wrong. That was when we found out there were 5 of them.
We left the vets went home and had dinner. At about 1915 we settled down to watch IRON GIANT together. A few minute into the movie I thought I heard some squeaking, but the boys both said it was just a bird on the tv. Then a few minutes later I heard it again. Finally about 40 minutes into the movie, I decided to go check on Sandi. Imagine my surprise when I walked in on Sandi and 3 puppies already. I called the boys and they came down just in time to see number 4 born. The instant reaction -- YUC!! That is gross. LOL. By 2030 all 5 puppies were born. We had a little trouble with the last one. Sandi apparently got distracted with the others and although she cleaned him up, she left some of the sack on his face. There was just enough there to cover his entire nose and mouth. Luckily I came back to check on them and saw him laying off by himself not really moving. He is fine now.
Altogether we have 3 little girls (the first 3 born) and 2 little boys. Coincidentally the three girls are the same color pattern as mommy and the 2 boys are dark like daddy. We don't know yet if any of them will show the dapple markings like Balou. Two of the girls have small white spots on their foreheads, and one has a big white chest marking. Both boys just look Black and tan right now. I am also unsure how to tell if they will be long or short hair at this point. We will see. We gave the puppies little names so that we can tell them apart for weighing them and keeping up with them.
First we have "Red" -- She is the darkest of the 3 little girls and has a really small white dot on her forehead. She weighed 7 1/8 ozs
Second we have "Dot" -- She has a big white spot on her forehead, and is the biggest of the girls. She weighed 7 1/2 ozs
Third was "Star" -- She is the smallest of all the puppies (runt). She has a really big white chest marking. She weighed 5 7/8 ozs
** We know the girls were born between 1900-1930 but don't know what order. **
Fourth we have "Chubby" -- He is the largest of all the puppies, and is just a big boy. Not only does he weigh more, but his face and paws are twice as big as his brother. He just looks huge next to the others. He was the first of the boys born, and weighed 7 3/4 ozs
Fifth we have "Midget" -- He is not the smallest, but he just looks so tiny next to his brother. He weighed 7 1/8 ozs.

Oh my goodness!! How cute are those puppies!!! (And what a totally weird vet, LOL) I can not believe that Sandi possibly fit 5 little puppies in her tiny self. I should never complain about the third trimester again!
I was laughing at the boys' responses to the birthing process. My boys are the same way, and whenever we watch one of their birthing videos, they are always quick to point out how thrilled they are to be boys, LOL. Nothing like having an object lesson right in front of them, though. So I guess they'll know exactly what is going on when you go into labor with this one! : )
