Mount Vernon

Our trip to Mount Vernon started out great, became very stressful, but ended awesome. LOL Much to tell. After what seemed an eternity stuck inside because of the winter weather I decided it was time we got out. (Ok, it was actually only a couple weeks.)After Zeke finished Tae Kwon Do class we all packed up and headed south. I figured it would take us 2 hours to get there and we would have at least 3 hours to tour and look around. Well, first we left an hour later than expected. Then, after we left we stopped for lunch, and then we stopped for gas. We drove for a while and then made the fatal mistake -- we took the back roads. AAAAGHHH. You can never tell if the back roads are going to cost you or save you around here. Anyway, some where along the way we had two more stops for bathroom breaks since Olivia is potty training. Every stop adding 15 more minutes to the drive. All in all it took us almost 3.5 hours to get there. We arrived 30 minutes prior to the start of the last tour of Washington's home, and 1 hour prior to closing of the property. I was so upset since we drove all that way for ONE HOUR. I couldn't believe it -- We were going to spend almost 6 hours in the car in one day to spend ONE HOUR out of the car sight seeing. Not a happy camper. All that said, it was a beautiful day and the tour was really cool and the kids all enjoyed walking around and Zeke really liked checking out the house. We also decided that since it was SO EXPENSIVE to get in and not much more for an annual pass we bought the pass. That was we can go back an see more of the property at a later date. We even bought an annual pass for Russell too so he can go back with us. Now we have to go back later to get the annual PICTURE pass made since the photographer was already gone for the day.LOL The learning center there is actually pretty neat and the grounds would be a cool place to go for a picnic and a little out door schooling and history some time in the next year. We did manage to take a few pictures. The one of the tree is Washington's view from his back porch, and is a tree he actually planted.

So funny that you had an experience at Mt. Vernon! The one time we went was on Presidents' Day several years ago (before I was pregnant with Anna), where admission is free. It was a total madhouse full of people. The line to take the tour was a mile long, it seemed, so we just walked around. The kids really enjoyed what they saw, but as we walked, Bob and I both started not feeling so good. We made it home and crashed into bed with a terrible, terrible flu. The boys had to fend for themselves for several days. We were so sick! So whenever I think of Mt. Vernon, I think of the feeling of starting to get sick, and I NEVER want to go back AGAIN! LOL
