An Great Visit with Cousins and an Excuse to be Tourists

My brother, Stephen, and his wife and four boys came to visit during their Spring Break. His boys have never been to this area before so we had a really good time. We took another "Spring Break" (LOL) from our school work, and did a lot of playing and site seeing. Unfortunately it was a very cold and rainy time for most of the week they were here, but we did manage to see quite a bit. The first thing we went to see was Gettysburg. We went Sunday after church, and checked out the gift shop before we left for the driving tour. It was a bit rainy -- ok we got POURED on -- but the sun was out a bit. It was out enough for us to enjoy getting out and looking at some locations -- despite all the wind. We had a really good time, but failed to notice that the gift shop closed early on Sundays. So, when we got back to get them their souvenirs, it was closed. Oh well, That was the least of our worries. On our 1 hour drive home my car began having problems. I was unsure if it was even going to make it home. It has been parked since that day, because the inspection sticker expired and I don't have the time or money to get it fixed right now. LOL. Thankfully, we still have Chris' truck.

My kids have a lot of activities on Mondays so we were going to do a quick run to Antietam Battlefield that morning and then do music and karate and soccer in the afternoon. Well, it rained and was very cold, so we just spent the day playing at the house and running about to activities. We were so happy to wake up Tuesday morning to a BEAUTIFUL day. We spent the day Tuesday on the Mall in D.C. We drove to the nearest metro station and My brother, his wife, me, 2 one year olds, 2 three year olds, a six year old, 2 eight year olds, and a thirteen year old, all took the metro into D.C. We were looked at by all, and I am sure most of them felt sorry for us. LOL. I just counting all day 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. . .yep we're all here -- I think I thought about you about a dozen times Claire. LOL. Anyway, we had a blast. The kids loved the train and were really well behaved all day. We saw all the monuments and walked the whole mall, ending the day in front of the White House for pictures.

Wednesday was as miserable as Tuesday was great. The kids did ok at first, but then we got to the Library of Congress and they crammed us in with the rudest group of people and a guide who was quiet as a church mouse. After everyone -- who did not need an elevator in our group -- crammed onto the elevator, they turned around and looked at me with my two little ones in a double stroller and NO ROOM left in the elevator and DID NOTHING. I couldn't believe it. Not one person offered to walk or to give me their spot so I had to wait for the elevator to come back. By the time I got to where the rest of the group was the guide had already been speaking for several minutes and the rude adults in our group REFUSED to allow the children to get close enough to hear her. Finally, in despair, we left the group to tour on our own. It was not a stellar visit, and we wasted half our morning there. My kids had already had a WONDERFUL visit there in the past, but I felt bad that the visit went so poorly for my brother's family. After the Library of Congress the weather was getting worse. We went to the Air and Space Museum, and had a pretty good visit. When we left it was storming pretty hard for our walk to the metro station. I suppose the day could have been worse.

Thursday, we were going to go Bowling for Jesse's 8th birthday and have a cake and pizza. Kristi and I with even a little help from Russell, baked and decorated a cake to look like a baseball. Cake and Pizza went great, however, the bowling alley changed it's hours (I didn't know), and we were unable to go bowling. I took Jesse to Walmart where he picked out the movie Garfield, and everyone went home for movie and popcorn. On Friday, they got all packed up, and we went to Chuck E Cheese for lunch and they headed home. It was a fun week.
