Adventure Racing

Yes, I still have the bug to adventure race. I love the challenge in it and am excited to have a young runner in the family (Ezekiel) to make it even easier to get out and train. Chris, was so wonderful, and agreed to keep the kids while I went on a long 4 day weekend to run a race with a friend in Kansas. Of course it wasn't just about running the race. It was about catching up with an old friend who I had not seen in almost 6 years. I flew out Friday morning, and came home the following Monday. It was an awesome time.

My friend Jo and I,(yes I said Jo)met in Nav school and have been friends ever since. Whenever our paths have crossed (or even come close) through our time in the Air Force we have always made the effort to get together. Jo has always been a biker who runs out of necessity and, and I have always been a runner who bikes for leisure. Somehow, we found ourselves both interested in Adventure racing, and neither able to find a team mate. All of our friends (pretty much all of them) think we are crazy. So, when she wrote to me and asked if I was interested I said yes.

The race required some Mountain Biking, Hiking and minimal land navigation, and Canoeing. Although it started out as a very cold day, it turned out to be the perfect day for a race. We had a lot of fun together. It is so nice to do a challenging thing with someone without any conflicts, accusations, tempers etc. . . We just had a really good time. We made some mistakes and learned a lot. We actually ended up placing 2nd in our division -- Two Woman Teams, and YES there were more than 2 teams. LOL. The rest of the weekend we talked and talked and talked about 6 years of not seeing each other, and about memories. I can't wait to do it again. It will be much easier now that she just got new orders and she is headed to Wright Pat. YEA!

That is so cool! I have never herd of adventure racing, but it sounds like fun. I think it is so neat that you are raising up your own upcoming partner--I bet there aren't many mom/son teams out there! So far none of my boys love running, although they all do it. I don't foresee a bunch of races in our future, though!
